California Ranks 34th Among States Building the Most Homes

The U.S. faces a housing shortage of 2.5 to 5.5 million units, with median home prices rising nearly $88,000 from 2020 to 2025. In 2024, about 1.48 million new homes were authorized, matching pre-2008 levels but insufficient to close the gap. Construction delays have increased, with 13% of homes taking over 13 months to build. Idaho leads new home construction, authorizing 21.2 units per 1,000 existing homes, double the national average.
